Hollow dense concrete blocks

Hollow dense concrete blocks

Hollow concrete blocks are a popular choice in the construction industry. The hollow design of these blocks makes them lighter in weight and easier to handle, whilst still providing excellent structural support.

All our hollow dense concrete blocks are low carbon as standard - up to an 50% carbon reduction compared with using OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement).

What are the advantages of hollow concrete blocks?

A hollow block contains one or more voids which pass through the block from top to bottom. They differ from a cellular block, which contains one or more formed voids that do not fully go through the block. Hollow concrete blocks are lower in weight than solid blocks of the same size, which makes them easier to handle and install, reducing construction time and labour costs. Where there are weight restrictions within a building, hollow blocks come into their own.

The hollow design of the blocks not only reduces the weight of the blocks but also provides sound absorption properties. This can be important for properties that are near roads where external traffic noises need to be blocked out.

These sound insulation properties also help reduce noise transfer within rooms, which can be helpful in both housing and commercial properties, such as offices and hospitals etc. The void provides thermal insulation benefits, too, which can reduce heating loss, resulting in lower heating bills.

When the voids are left unfilled, they can be used as drainage in bridge construction allowing water to drain but avoid erosion.

When would a solid concrete block be a better choice than a hollow block?

A solid block can be manufactured to a higher strength overall compared with a hollow concrete block, where the void is left empty. However, where strength is important, the voids in a hollow block can be filled with reinforcement and poured concrete to provide a significantly stronger wall.

How are hollow concrete blocks manufactured?

The manufacturing process of hollow concrete blocks requires precision and quality control. The process begins with the batching of raw materials, which includes cement, sand, aggregates, and water. These ingredients are mixed together to form a homogenous mixture.

The mixture is then transferred to a block-making machine, where it is press moulded into the desired shape and size. What makes hollow concrete blocks special is the hollow centre, which is created during the moulding process.

The blocks are then left to cure for a specific period, which can range from a few hours to several days, depending on the type of block that is being produced. After curing, the blocks are tested for strength and durability before they are ready to be delivered to builders merchants, builders, developers and groundworkers throughout the North West.

Our hollow blocks are manufactured in accordance with EN1996-1 Group 1 Manufacturing Standard BS EN 771-3:2011.

Where are hollow concrete blocks used?

Hollow concrete blocks can be used for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls due to their strength and durability. They can be used for interior walls and partitions, especially in areas that require soundproofing.

Where strength is essential in large houses, commercial buildings and retaining walls, the voids in the hollow concrete blocks can be filled with reinforcement and poured concrete to provide an incredibly strong solid wall, capable of withstanding high loads.

Hollow block walls are especially popular for use in agricultural buildings and large commercial buildings. In commercial and industrial construction, hollow concrete blocks are used for large-scale structures such as warehouses, factories, and office buildings. Their strength and durability make them an ideal choice for these types of projects. Hollow dense blocks can be used as internal walls including fire break structures.

How to choose quality hollow concrete blocks

At CCP we take great pride in the quality of the blocks we produce. Our blocks are uniform in size and shape, with smooth surfaces and sharp edges. We check our blocks to make sure they are free from cracks or other defects that could compromise their strength and durability.

When choosing a supplier, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the strength and durability of the blocks. At CCP we can provide this information along with the thermal, fire and sound insulation properties, which can help you choose the best blocks for your project.

We can provide you with all the necessary information about the blocks, including their composition, manufacturing process, and performance characteristics.

Are hollow concrete blocks sustainable?

At CCP, we have led the way in the development of low-carbon solutions for our customers. All CCP hollow concrete blocks are manufactured using our Greenbloc technology, which offers up to a 50% reduction in embodied carbon as standard, compared with a traditional OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) block.

You no longer have to choose between buying on price or doing the right thing for the plant, as our Greenbloc standard blocks are the same cost as a traditional higher carbon OPC block available from other manufacturers. Our concrete blocks are available with carbon savings of up to 50% at no additional cost. All Greenbloc products perform to the same specification, performance, quality and aesthetic characteristics as 100% cement versions.

Same performance, same cost, lower carbon.
